DAVID BLACK LIFT-OFF SCULPTURE

– Washington D.C.

We preformed a structural analysis of a 19-foot high, 39- by 29-foot David Black sculpture on the southwest corner of the City Vista Plaza at Fifth and K Streets in Washington, D.C. Lift Off is a transparent, canopy-like structure that spreads out while not interrupting pedestrian movement. This sculpture is constructed of welded 3/8-inch by 1/2-inch aluminum plate and designed with a small floodlight placed at the end of each of the four cross-beams to illuminate the light yellow origami-inspired scallop forms. A small, double seat is to be placed at the central base inviting pedestrians to relax, visually explore the sculpture or use as a photo backdrop. The sculpture is designed in coordination with the paving pattern, the planned outdoor restaurant seating and pedestrian movement patterns across the plaza and along the sidewalks.

GLENWOOD GARDENS BRIDGE

– Woodlawn, OH

The Hamilton County Park District required the construction of two bridges to cross Mill Creek for a proposed nature trail. The first bridge was a 70 ft span and the second was a 120 ft span. The park district required both bridges to be economical, identical, virtually maintenance free, aesthetically blend in with natural surroundings, and be clear spans across the creek. The construction easement for each bridge was limited to 25 ft in width. The 70 ft span bridge is a standard ODOT design which could accommodate HS20-44 traffic. Steven Schaefer Associates, Inc. along with the local precaster developed a prestressed concrete box beam that would carry pedestrian traffic as well as light emergency traffic equal to the ODOT H15-44 loading for the 120 ft span bridge. Both bridges required drilled pier foundations for the abutments due to the poor soils in the area.
